I had a run-in with a neighbor today. The long and the short of it was that the neighbor was incredibly rude, hateful and mean-spirited. I had to remember this was just my impression (have to check the judgment factor). Someone else might see her reaction as appropriate. After her second and, third remark, I decided my impression was dead on…or was it? Time for a reality check!
After checking my intention, tone and wordage I decided it wasn’t me. After two attempts at talking to her rationally, I just stood there in wonderment; the level of hostility this woman displayed was amazing. My response to her was “Are you serious?” Again, the amount of irritation she displayed just didn’t equal out in my way of thinking. There are family members and friends who tell me periodically that I’m too nice, passive, or easygoing. However, I fall back on the idea that we should treat people the way in which we would like to be treated. To date I have been fairly successful with this way of being.

DonorsChoose.org is a project/website that Charles Best started in 2000 to give citizens an opportunity to fund student projects around the country with donations as small as a few dollars. According to Charles Best, ” Someone with a small amount of money can make a real difference.”
Public school students and teachers don’t always have the materials needed to do hands on projects, or purchase learning materials necessary for their classroom. I have experienced this first hand. I was a teacher for 12 years and there were many things we couldn’t do because we didn’t have the necessary funding. At times as a teacher I provided my own supplies which over time is very costly, especially in this current economy. I think Charles Best’s program is a wonderful opportunity for citizens, teachers and students to come together to create learning opportunities and experiences with many small donations.
How Does The Project/Website Work?

More and more I’m seeing news coverage, internet coverage and talk at my church of how we can support one another and how churches can help guide us through this economically challenging time. I think this is a great blessing for our country. It’s a time where our country and our global community are realizing we have to think outside the box. We have to begin living our lives in a different way, with different attitudes and convictions for our future.
We must make efforts to curb our out of control consumerism and learn to live in harmony with the earth and our values. Constantly buying more is not only destructive to our wallets it’s destructive to our family life, when finances need to be budgeted. It also isn’t helping our planet with the trash produced by this continual cycle of buy and throw away that we have been living for at least the last decade.
What I am seeing through this coverage is a new way of supporting each other, a simplified way of living with reality checks. Churches here in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area are creating Sunday sermons on topics such as personal debt, and classes on handling finances, others are offering classes on saving on groceries, some have launched websites of tips and inspirations for surviving this economic downturn. I think this is a coming together of spirituality and every day life. We are learning to support each other with both practical knowledge and spiritual understanding through an economy that has everyone concerned.

This is truly life changing and amazing. I know three specific people who live with extreme clutter and according to Peter Walsh a surprisingly large number of American families live in similar chaos. Peter did a show with Oprah in October. What I took from this show is the possibility of REAL LIFE CHANGE for these people. When Peter went into these unsuspecting people’s home it was obvious they were paralyzed with the uncertainty of HOW TO BEGIN. They had created situations in their home that were so overwhelming that they just allowed it to spread further becoming out of control chaos.
Peter Walsh was AMAZING. He is focused and has a plan. He gave some excellent tips and ideas for those who are living in that kind of clutter. Actually his ideas are excellent for EVERYONE, even those of us with a single closet or drawer that needs attention. To view Peter Walsh’s website take a look at this link.
His first plan of action with homeowners was to look around the room and have the owner assess how they feel about the clutter and their home. Then Peter started with two bags, black for trash, blue for recycle and with a stop watch set for ten minutes they attacked one cupboard. Peter basically stated to the homeowners before they began, “if you haven’t touched it in 12 months you need to think about letting it go.” So with Peter and the stop watch I watched as they cleared out an entire kitchen cabinet filled to the brim with cups, glasses and a multitude of children’s drink cups and amusement park drink cups. Many were recyclable and within six minutes Peter and the home owner had restored organization and neatness to the cupboard and they were left with a bag of trash and a bag for recycling.
